LETTER FROM THE EDITOR, FIONA DONALD

Tonight marks the final training session at Glenogle for Advanced and Intermediate 1 but we celebrated the end of the year with a fun Christmas handicap race at Leith Victoria on Sunday night.

There was a great turn out so credit to the statisticians who worked out what heats everyone should be going in and the time swimmers should be entering the water. Congratulations to Ted O’Connor who won for the second year in a row and it was great to see coaches, David, Leanne and Fiona joining in.

Another great social occasion in the festive calendar was the Club Champs at Leith Academy. The full results are on the website and prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each age group will be presented at the Club Dance on Saturday 27 February at Heriots Rugby Club so if you’ve won any of the categories make sure you put that date in your diary and enjoy your moment of glory.

Training restarts on Monday 4 January at Glenogle and Ainslie Park. Looking forward to seeing everyone again in 2016.

EXTERNAL COMPETITIONS, REPORTS BY HEAD COACH, FIONA ALLAN

LOTHIAN REGION GRADED MEET 14.11.15

We had another super day of swimming at Prestonpans at the LR Graded Meet which was very busy with a lot of swimmers unable to get swims because of this. Our swimmers who did qualify did really well with 59PB’s 8 of which were in the finals. Even the swims that were not PB’s were good positive swims with swimmers doing their best & hopefully learning from the experience.

The morning session saw Inverleith with 8 finalists & 2 reserves for the finals. One of our finalists Cara Bryce who PB’d to get into the final & again in the final was swimming in her very first external competition, well done Cara. We got 5 medals from these finals with 4PB swims. Ines Donald as won her 100IM which was a HDW event (Heat Declared Winner).

In some of the swims we had big PB’s which is fantastic. Morgan Reid who was called in to swim from a reserve position took 5secs off her 100IM, Aidan Carey took 14secs off the same event, Rachel McLeod took 8secs off her 100B/C, Gregor Watson improved by 8secs in his 100B/C & Aidan Dowie did extremely well to take more than 4secs off his 100F/C as his goggles came off at the start. Both Kerr Duncan & Aidan Dowie swam really well in their 100B/C to achieve new times as they had not done this event previously.

In the afternoon we had 8 finalists & 3 reserves winning 3 medals & again 4PB swims.

Some of the larger PB’s in the afternoon were from Joshua Mitchell 7secs off his 200IM, Lucy McDonald 3secs off the 50Fly, Aidan Carey took 4secs off his 50Fly & Sam Drainer took 5secs off the same event, Daniel Main took a massive 13secs off his 100BR & Kerr Duncan improved his 100BR by over 6secs.

Very well done everyone.

EAST DISTRICT AGE GROUPS Round 2  - 28/29.11.15

Back to Glenrothes once again for the second round of the ED Age Groups. Once again we had some super swimming. This weekend was all 200’s. On the Saturday we had 12 swimmers taking part & on the Sunday we had 16. It is fantastic to see so many swimmers achieving the qualifying times for the EDAG’s.

On Saturday Inverleith swimmers managed 15PB’s & 4 finalists. Both Cameron Alexander & Angus Allison got into the fly & the BR finals. Angus got a silver & gold respectively & Cameron came in 6TH in both events. Both boys did 8sec PB’s to make the final & Angus took a further 4secs off in the final. Again in the BR both boys did PB’s to make the final & again Angus showed his determination & PB’d again in the final.

Sunday morning saw some of the older swimmers taking part with Angus Skakle doing a good PB in his 200B/C. Joe Penman got into the B/C final & PB’d to win the silver. Claire Dow & Joe were 1ST reserves for BR & F/C finals but didn’t get swims. In the afternoon we managed 12 PB’s with some amazing swims. Orla Kennedy took 8secs off her 200Fly & Adele McDaid took 10secs off her 200Fly, great swimming girls. Adele then took 9secs off her 200BR. Angus made the B/C & F/C finals with Felix Hale & Cameron being reserves & Adele made the Fly final. Adele had a fabulous swim in her final taking another 7secs off her time in a thrilling race & won the silver. Angus PB’d again in both B/C & F/C finals getting 4TH in B/C & silver in F/C.

It was a very successful weekend for Inverleith with our swimmers again making finals & winning medals. Well done to everyone who took part.

THE CLUB SHOP

Huge thanks to everyone for making the Club Champs such a great fund-raising success for the Club as well as a super day of swimming.   We exceeded all previous records (at least those known to me!) so many thanks to all those who baked cakes (Stuart – your snowmen cupcakes were amazing), brought gifts for the raffle and tombola, bought kit from the shop, goodies from the cafe and bought lots of raffle and tombola tickets too.

The cafe, raffle, tombola and toasties made almost £700 – fantastic!  I was kept busy in the shop with over £1000 of sales and orders.

A special mention needs to go to Kath and Colin Drainer who made and provided the filled rolls, Mike Andrew and Janet Bain who manned the cafe (and to Hilary Alexander for providing the tea, coffee etc), Alex and Anya Hale and Shona O’Connor who ran a very efficient operation at the toastie stall and Gillian Alexander, Leanne Reid and Helen Kennedy (and Orla) who ran the tombola and raffle.  Thanks to Kathy as well for bringing along everything else for the cafe (and roping her son, Alan in too to help with the unloading!).

Inverleith tattoos are now in stock. A good way for swimmers to brand themselves at external competitions!

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas

AND FINALLY...

Inverleith swimmers aren’t just good in the pool. Jack McInally, Aidan and Ruairidh Bain recently travelled to the Velodrome in Derby for the British Tae Kwondo Championships. Jack is now Junior British Champion for TAGB Tae Kwondo at red belt and Aidan is the Junior Tag Team Middleweight Champion at Red Belt. Congratulations to all of them.

And if you’re feeling a bit flat post Christmas you can bring back the Christmas spirit by going to see Scarlett and Ines Donald in panto at Wardie Church from Thursday 7 – Saturday 9 January. Thankfully this year not taking place the night before East Districts!

Have a wonderful Christmas. See you in 2016.
