A word from Kathy

Before we get too far into this New Year I felt I should take you back to the tragic accident in December which resulted in us losing not just a parent, poolside helper, timekeeper and treasurer but more importantly, a friend.

Gavin, with his friendly smile for all, his easy going ways and his willingness to undertake new challenges, will be sadly missed.

I could always tell when he had too much time on his hands or if he had been speaking to Keith during their lunchbreak at their real jobs - a flurry of e-mails would follow and I knew that if I saw a spreadsheet then it was time to reach for the paracetemol. I never thought I would miss them but I do.

Keith passed a comment recently which just described Gavin to a tee. He said "Everyone can do the tasks that are good fun but only a certain type of person will take on the more onerous tasks. Gavin was just that sort of person".

The family requested there be no flowers but instead donations could be made to Scottish Sports Aid and Donor Family Network Charities. I think Gavin would have been amazed at the generosity with £1800 collected.

I hope that Jill and the girls will take strength from our thoughts and remember that we are on hand to offer any help in the hard times ahead.

Thank you

Thank you all very much for the very generous Christmas gifts that you gave to the coaches. It is not expected but very much appreciated.

Competition reports

Lothian Region Graded Meet - 10 Nov 2012

We had 29 swimmers accepted for this popular Meet but several rejected as the event was very oversubscribed.

Unfortunately, we had quite a few call offs - some through illness/injury which is understandable but others did not turn up on the day. Please commit to coming once your registration has been confirmed by Grant. By not going, you may have prevented another swimmer from being entered into the competition.

In the morning session we had some super swims, achieving 26 PBs (personal best times) then further improvements in the finals, which is fantastic. 8 of our swimmers made the finals with another 2 making the reserves, though unfortunately they didn’t get to swim in the finals.

Some excellent swims in the afternoon session produced another 21 PBs. Some of our swimmers who were reserves also got swims which was great. In this session we had 7 finalists & 1 reserve for the finals. A further 5 PBs were achieved in the afternoon finals.

Very well done to all the swimmers who took part. Their performance showed that we are definitely heading in the right direction especially those who swam in heats & finals and produced a PB in each swim.

East District Age Group Championships - 1st & 2nd Dec 2012

On the second day of the East District Championships:

  • Claire Dow competed in the 200 backstroke, touching with a PB at 2.39.66
  • Fraser Allison rounded his weekend off by competing in the 200 Freestyle, swam a PB but narrowly missed out on getting into the final
  • Sophie Hamilton and Ailsa Inglis came up against an extremely strong field in the 200 breaststroke -  Sophie came away with a personal best

President's Time Band - 7th Dec 2012

Many swimmers travelled to Haddington for the Annual President's Tme Band Gala. In previous years, our swimmers have swum too fast resulting in us finishing last - so it was about time for a change in tactics.

Inverleith was in first place after each event... until the relays. It was a close call but the evening finished in a 3-way tie with Portobello, Tranent and us in first place.

Well done everyone!

Scottish National Short Course 14th-16th Dec

After some good hard training sessions including a few early morning ones, Claire Dow took to the national stage at the Commonwealth Pool for the Scottish Short Course Championships.

On the Saturday afternoon, Claire blasted through her 100 IM, knocking 6 seconds off her previous time to finish in 1:13:68.

The next day, Claire competed in the 400 IM -  somewhat more nerve-racking when her cap snapped as she was about to step onto the blocks. Nonetheless, Claire set another PB taking 4 seconds off her previous time.

Very well done to Claire who swam brilliantly in her races.

A big thank you also to the advanced swimmers who came along to support Claire: Fraser Allison, Ross Borwick, Sophie Hamilton, Eve Lovell and Jonah Walsh – your support was appreciated guys!

Thanks

Fiona and Lana

Social events

Annual Presentation Dance

One of the highlights of the IASC year is almost upon us. I can confirm that the Annual Presentation Dance will be held at Carricknowe Bowling Club, Broomhall Avenue, Edinburgh, on Friday 15th March, starting at 7.00pm, when various Club trophies will be presented to the 2012 winners. The presentations will be followed by a buffet and Disco. A cash bar is also available.

As has been the case over the past couple of years, the Social Committee will be absorbing most of the cost of staging the event. Once again therefore, all IASC swimmers will be admitted free to the Dance. The price of a ticket for parents and siblings who are not members of the Club has been kept at £5 per ticket (free for under fives).

To comply with safety rules (there is a capacity limit) and for catering purposes, entrance is by ticket only for everyone attending whether you are a swimmer or non-club member These will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis so to avoid disappointment, don’t leave it too late to get your tickets. In particular, we look forward to seeing some of the new faces who have joined us in the last year.

Tickets are now available from either myself or Davie Little. Please catch us at one of the training sessions or drop me an email: keith.inglis@selex-es.com

As usual, donations of prizes for the raffle would be greatly appreciated (please just bring donations along on the night)

Thanks in advance and we look forward to seeing you there.

Keith

Swim Shop

Happy New Year and many thanks to everyone who bought goods from the Swim Shop last year, especially at the Club Championships where we did a roaring trade with the new club sweatshirts.

We still have some sweatshirts in stock at the introductory price of £16 - available in the following sizes: child 7/8; 9/10; adult sizes XS, S, M, L and XL. Other sizes are available to order at £20 each.

The price of IASC black/yellow swim hats is up to £5 this year. However, girls Kiefer swimsuits and boys Kiefer jammers in club colours are down to £14/16 (depending on size).

Many of you have been enquiring about the IASC kitbags. Unfortunately, Prostar has withdrawn this product from their line and new kitbags are unlikely to be available until April. I am keeping in regular contact with our suppliers and will let you know, via the notice board, as soon as they are available again. Sorry to all you disappointed and very patient people!

The shop info and order form will be updated on the new IASC website shortly. In the meantime, you can catch me at Leith Victoria on a Sunday, call 079999 35178 or email swimshop@inverleith.com

Thanks

Judith
