Easter camp

The annual trip to Newcastleton is fast approaching as swimmers, coaches and parent volunteers prepare to head off next week. Don't forget to pack your onesies!

The following week, nine swimmers from Advanced Squad will be making their way to swim camp at Crystal Palace.

We hope that everyone has a safe trip and a great time. For those staying behind, have a restful Easter break.

If anyone would like to write about their experience at camp for the next newsletter, let me know!

Queens Baton Relay for Glasgow 2014

Many of you will know Tom Watson who has been involved with Inverleith ASC for 35 years both as a coach and then Head Coach until his retirement recently.

As a fitting tribute and in recognition of his dedication to the club, Tom has been selected to carry the Queen's Baton on a part of its travels around Scotland before the start of the Commonwealth games in Glasgow this Summer.

Look out for more information nearer the time on when and where Tom will be carrying the Baton and please go along to cheer him on.

Congratulations Tom!

Competition reports

Bellshill Open, Bellshill (15 & 16 February 2014)

Well done to everyone who took part in the Bellshill Open. This was the first time we had entered the Meet and what an eye opener! The standard was exceptionally high but by heading West, we had the opportunity of experiencing a different venue and coming up against different swimmers. There were some excellent swims with lots of PBs.

Silver:   Sophie Hamilton - 200 FLY
              Claire Dow - 200 IM

Scottish Schools Swimming Championships, East Kilbride (7 March 2014)

Congratulations to those who made the Scottish Schools finals having qualified at the Edinburgh Schools Championships at the end of last year. Claire Dow, Sophie Hamilton, Fraser Allison, Jonah Walsh and Joe Penman made the trip to East Kilbride to represent their schools.

Well done to Fraser who took silver in the 200 Breast.

Lothian Leagues Round 1, Prestonpans (8 March 2014)

The first of three rounds of the Lothian Leagues took place at Prestonpans on Saturday 8 March.

We had two 10-11 Boys teams but only managed to enter one Girls team which is a pity considering the number of swimmers we have at the moment.

Also in the afternoon session we had one 12-13 Girls team, one 12-13 Boys team & one 14 & over Girls team. Unfortunately we didn't enter a 14 & Over Boys team as no-one responded to the email.

The morning session produced 11 PBs and some very close to their PBs, so some great swimming. A special mention to:

  • Cameron Alexander for swimming ‘TOO FAST’ in his 100 IM, going outside the time band to produce a 6.5sec PB

  • Scarlett Donald for taking 7secs off her 200 FREE

  • Carla Lovell who had a great 100 IM taking 5secs off her time

  • Daniel Penman for taking 4secs off his 200 FREE with a super swim

There were great swims from Charlotte Drainer, Angus Skakle & Emily Mander in the 200 FREE, all achieving great PBs. Charlotte & Angus also swam another PB each in the 200 IM a short time later which was brilliant. We also had some super relay swims.

At the moment we don’t know what positions our teams are lying but we should find out in Round 2 which takes place on 12 April.

Well done swimmers!

ELST Novice Meet 2014

We had 14 swimmers accepted for this novice gala, 13 of whom took part and there was some super swimming.

The morning session was for the 8 & under & 9 year olds who swam 25 FLY & 50 of the other strokes. We had 4 swimmers in this session all swimming in four events. For some, this was their first external competition. The swimmers managed 13 PBs, 4 medals & 1 speeding ticket!

We hope to organise another session later in the year. Look out for more information nearer the time.

Annual Presentation Dance

Thank you for supporting the Presentation dance. I think it's fair to say that everyone had a great time and there was some fabulous dancing on display - what a talented bunch!

Many thanks to David Little, Kathy Pitcher and Janette Bell for putting on a great spread; to Sarah Matthews for organising and presenting the trophies and medals, and to Hilary Alexander for presenting the raffle.

The evening raised a profit of £430.05.

Thanks again.

Swim Shop

Thanks to everyone who bought the new IASC Stanno yellow/black t-shirts. Judith can still order these if anyone wants one, although you may have to wait a wee while as she has to order a minimum of 6 at a time.

Judith also has some new Stanno kitbags in stock for £23 each.

Email her at judithhetherington@blueyonder.co.uk or catch her most Sundays at Leith Victoria if you would like one (and if you haven't ordered one already).  There is limited stock and they are going fast, so grab one while you can!

Unfortunately, Thompsons who supplied some of our club gear, and were based on Leith Walk has closed down. They have promised to continue to supply our black hoodies and t-shirts from their new premises. If this doesn't work out, please bear with Judith as she tries to find a new supplier.

Thanks again for your continuing support to the gearshop - it's much appreciated!
