A word from Grant

With the summer holidays almost upon us, that's another season nearly over and it has been another busy one. The club continues to be one of the most popular in Edinburgh with record numbers and we operated a waiting list this year for the first time in several years. Swimmers at all levels participated in many competitions - from novice events all the way up to several of our Advanced Squad who will be taking part in the Scottish National Age Group Championships in Aberdeen later this month.

I want to thank all of our coaches and poolside helpers who have volunteered their time over the year, our Committee for all their organisational skills and to you, our parents, for your support throughout the year.

As most of you are probably aware, we are losing Lana Borwick this summer as she looks to further her career as a professional coach. Lana has made a great impact in the time she's been here and some of the improvements in her Advanced Squad have been remarkable. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Lana for all of her hard work and to wish all the very best in her future career. Whilst we are sad Lana is going, we are however looking forward to the opportunities that this gives our other coaches.

All that remains is for me to wish you all a very good summer whatever you're doing and I look forward to welcoming back all of our swimmers after the holidays.

Thanks

Grant

News

Queen's Baton Relay

As you may remember, Tom Watson, who was a coach at the Club for more than 35 years, was nominated to be a Baton Bearer for the Commomwealth Games.

Tom will be taking up his segment during the afternoon of Saturday 14 June at approximately 3.40pm in Leith. He will travel along Duke Street from house No.20 (blue door) and finish at No.35 (green door) - a distance of about 200m.

Please come along and support him.

World Book Night comes to Inverleith

Many thanks to Fiona Brownlee (Scarlett and Ines's mum) for nominating Inverleith to be a recipient of World Book Night 2014.

The Club was lucky to be selected as a 'giver' which meant that at a swim session around 23 April, parents and swimmers were offered a choice of free books including The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Tales of the City and The Humans.

As part of the event, please feel free to swap books or pass them onto someone else.

Commonwealth Games Tickets

Two opportunities have come up for Club members to get their hands on tickets for the Commonwealth games.

  • Firstly, the Club has been allocated two tickets from Scottish Swimming for the finals session on Friday 25 July starting at 7.00pm, Tollcross Swimming pool in Glasgow. We are not allowed to use these tickets to make any profit for the club but we do need to cover the cost which is £146.

Any member of the club can put their name forward and the winner will be drawn randomly. The rules stipulate that the tickets must be used by a member of the club. They cannot be sold or transferred.

Anyone who would like to put their name forward for these tickets should email
Normawood@btinternet.com with the subject heading CG tickets Inverleith ASC. Closing date is Monday 16 June

  • Secondly, SASA East District has been able to purchase a number of tickets for the aquatics events  All registered East District members are invited to submit their names for any or all of the sets of tickets. The lucky names will be drawn out of a hat and once payment in full has been received for the face value of the tickets then the tickets will be forwarded to the winners. These tickets may not be resold

    The ticket lots are:

    1.  2 tickets for heats on Saturday 26th July (Start time 10:30) @ £40 each (Total cost £80)
    2.  2 tickets for heats on Sunday 27th July (Start time 10:30) @ £40 each (Total cost £80)
    3.  3 tickets for finals on Friday 25th July (Start time 19:00 a.m) @ £70 each (Total cost £210)

Any East District Member wishing to participate in the draw should email sasaeastdistrictpresident@gmail.com stating which draw (1,2 or 3, or any combination) that they would like to enter, including their contact details and name, OR text Cath Fleming on 07596669778 OR write to: Mrs Catherine Fleming, 13 John Street, EDINBURGH, EH15 2EB.

Entries must be received by 7 June 2014.  Draw taking place on the 8th June. “Winners”  will be notified on the evening of Sunday 8th June. Monies should then be sent to James Laird, ED treasurer, thereafter tickets will be issued.

Swim camp report by Scarlett Donald

Swim Camp was in a village called Newcastleton in the Borders. The accommodation was in cabins. I shared with 10 children and 2 adult helpers. There were 2 dorms for the kids. Every morning we were woken up quite early to have breakfast of bacon or sausage rolls and porridge cooked by David then we either did swimming or an activity.

We were split into two groups. I was in Group A and my sister was in Group B. David was in charge of Group A and Fiona was in charge of a Group B.  It was a 20 metre pool and training was just like normal training except more often. The other activities included archery, zip wire, running, climbing, land training, low ropes, high ropes and orienteering. My favourite was zip wire. We swam twice a day. In the day we were in our groups and at night we were together. The early sessions were 2 hours and the evenings were an hour and a half. Lights out were at 10pm and we had to stop talking at 11pm but we didn't all do that!

We had lunch together in the dining hall which was two sorts of home made soup and crisps. Evening meals were different every night but it was all delicious. Faye was 12 while we were there. She couldn't swim because she had just had an operation but she still had really good fun. On her birthday we had cake and we all did the zip wire.

When we left we all really missed each other and as soon as I got home I went on to my iPad to chat to my friends from camp. I was very tired but glad we had the swim leagues the next day so I could see my friends again. Everyone got PBs so I think we've all improved. Even though we were really tired!

Hearts Novice Meet - Musselburgh Leisure Centre 11 May 2014

A busy weekend as this was the day after Round 3 of the Lothian Leagues.

We had 14 swimmers taking part in which I tell the swimmers is a ‘learning gala’ as for some of them it is their first experience of external competition. There are no disqualifications & before each stroke is swum there are demonstrations to show good technique, starts & turns. Our swimmers were very taken with one of the breaststroke drills & frequently ask to do it now!

Over the two sessions we managed to produce a massive 43 PBs which is fantastic. The swimmers also brought back a big haul of medals & Ines Donald received an ‘I swam too fast’ certificate.

Individual places:

Gold:       Joshua Mitchell 50 Fly
                Michael Skakle 50 B/C

Well done to all the swimmers who too part. Even if you didn’t go home with a medal you should be very proud of the way you swam & everyone got at least two PBs. Great swimming!

Swim West Lothian IM Tough Meet - Bathgate 16-18 May 2014

Last year we had a few swimmers at this event and because everyone had such a good time, we decided to enter a bigger team this year. Swum over five sessions, the first, held on the Friday evening was for the longer distances (800m girls & 1500m for boys). Fraser Allison & Joe Penman swam the 1500m and both achieved great times with Fraser coming 2nd & Joe 6th. Well done both!

Between 12 -16 swimmers took part in the remaining four sessions. Events ranged from 50m for all strokes to 400m in the IM and Free. The fastest 6 boys and girls in the 50 Free qualified for the final ‘Skins’ event. Well done to Fraser Allison who made it through to the third round  of the Skins before being knocked out.

Medals were awarded over each session rather than individual races.

We managed 65 PBs over the weekend - again lots of great swims. Places for individual events can be found on the SwimScotland website.

Medals for each session are as follows:

Session 1

Silver:   Fraser Allison
6th:       Joe Penman

Session 2

Gold:   Sophie Hamilton
           Joe Penman
5th       Fraser Allison
6th       Angus Allison

Session 3

Session 5
